I have two main research programs. The first is in developing insects as an alternate source of protein for food and feed. We focus on using food waste as a source of feed for the insects and reclaiming the water from the food waste. We have an insect rearing facility at the Campus Agricultural Center and recently founded a startup, HexaFeast LLC to commercialize these processes. The second research area is in ecological and evolutionary physiology of insects. We address the question of how insects prioritize investing resources (protein, lipids, carbohydrates) to the different functions (e.g., flight and reproduction) in response to changing environments. We mainly study hawkmoths, butterflies and beetles.
