Joe is the Director of the Office of Sustainability at the University of Arizona, and is responsible for strategically identifying, assessing, aligning, and expanding projects and initiatives that make the UA a more sustainable institution and engage our students and employees. Joe oversees and drives several key projects and initiatives with partners across the UA, advises the UA Green Fund Committee, and sits on President Hart's Advisory Council for Environmental Sustainability. An interdisciplinary environmental scientist, policy-wonk, and change agent, Joe received his doctorate in geography in 2006 and has over 15 years of combined experience in applied research, policy, and practice in the areas of air quality, water, climate change, and sustainability in higher education.
As an area extension agent, Mark Apel works with community organizations, elected officials, ranchers, planners, and land owners in Cochise, Graham, Santa Cruz, and Pima counties, along with other faculty at the UA in the fields of land use planning, sustainable development and design, climate change, natural resources, and economic impacts. He employs a number of delivery methods to raise awareness and knowledge around these issues, including workshops, fact-sheets, web presence, and GIS modeling. This position focuses on public and environmental policy and education for decision makers and rural residents, most notably targeting rural areas impacted by exurbanism.
I perform life cycle analyses of existing an emerging technologies in order to determine if environmental goals are actually being met during these changes. our work has identified that a flat out worldwide ban of hydrofluorocarbons could make global climate change worse with regards to applications of cooling where indirect carbon dioxide emissions would override direct global warming impacts of refrigerant lleaks. We are currently working on evaluating biodiesel from algal biomass for replacing traditional fossil fuel use. On the educational front, I have integrated sustainability into the senior chemical engineering design course and have trained all of our graduates in how to consider sustainability during process analyses. I also integrate sustainability themed homework problems in the lower level courses I teach in chemical engineering
David is a graduate student pursuing a Master's of Public Administration in the School of Government and Public Policy. As an undergraduate at the University of Arizona, he majored in Public Management and Policy with minors in Communications and Global Business and was a Clinton Scholar at the American University in Dubai in the summer of 2009. He is interested in international affairs and global policy of environmental issues and sustainability, particularly regional and international collaborative efforts to promote sustainable practices in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
David is an Office of Sustainability alum, and remains an important special projects resource. David graduated in May 2012 with a Master of Public Administration from the School of Government and Public Policy. As an undergraduate at the University of Arizona, he majored in public management and policy with minors in communications and global business and was a Clinton Scholar at the American University in Dubai in the summer of 2009. I don't have any formal eco or sustainability experience but I'm interested helping out and learning more. I organized volunteer groups for New York Cares in NYC to clean up parks (raking, planting, garbage pick-up, etc.) through my previous employer. I also was part of the green team to help make our company more eco-friendly (reusable dishes rather than paper/plastic, compost in the kitchen, energy efficiency, recycling, etc.). Please let me know if I can help in any way.
Maya is an Honors student majoring in microbiology and minoring in biochemistry at the University of Arizona. She is involved in several sustainability-themed projects on campus. As an Office of Sustainability intern, Maya works on the UA mesquite bean harvesting project. She is collecting and analyzing data on mesquite bean harvesting methods, yields, and aflatoxin levels. Maya is from the Pacific Northwest. She is a musician and a road cyclist.
Paper reduction! Much of our space is taken up by paper, and much of it does not need to be in hard copy form, but scanned and kept on the server. I've been slowly but surely replacing hard files with electronic ones, and maintaining new files electronically. Its easier and greener!
Leah Edwards is a Tucson native and a junior at the University of Arizona majoring in environmental and water resource economics and political science. Leah is a Flinn Scholar and and Honors student at the UA. She is a NASA Space Grant Intern and is passionate about urban sustainability.
Ome is an undergraduate junior majoring in Science of Sustainable Built Environments in the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona. Ome is also currently the Food Production Intern for the Office of Sustainability. Not only does she have an interest in sustainable building, but she is also the project manager of Students for Sustainability’s Food Committee on the UA campus. Ome enjoys playing piano, camping, hiking, and being actively involved within the Tucson community.
Dr. Enquist received his B.A from The Colorado College and his PhD from the University of New Mexico in 1998. He was an NSF postdoctoral fellow at the Santa Fe Institute and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. Dr. Enquist has served on the external faculty at the Santa Fe Institute since 2007; He is a broadly trained ecologist and plant biologists and is interested in (i) understanding how functional attributes of organisms influence larger scale ecological, ecosystem, and evolutionary dynamics; (ii) the origin and maintenance of functional and phylogenetic diversity; and (iii) understanding the function of terrestial ecosystems. A common theoretical theme focuses on the origin and ramifications of biological scaling laws. To address these questions he often works in tropical forests and high alpine ecosystems and uses physiological, ecosystem, informatics, and theoretical methods. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for Costa Rica, the Ecological Society of America's Mercer Award, a NSF CAREER Award, and the Popular Mechanics; Brilliant Top 10; Young Researcher; He was a 2009 Fellow at Charles University and the Center for Theoretical Study in Prague, Czech Republic and a CNRS Associate Research Fellow in Montpellier, France.

Areas of interest are recycling efforts and methods of energy efficiency and waste reduction in which administrative staff can be more knowledgable and educated in order to help with campus sustainability.
I found that the cleaning person in my building was instructed to throw away the boxes for recycling. This means that facilities put the boxes out with printed labels for which type of recyclables go where, but still throwing them in the trash.
BIO5 is located in the Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch Building at Cherry & Helen. Our 400+ residents are avid recyclers of post-consumer waste including lab materials such as pipette tip boxes. We want to be a part of the UA's move toward greater sustainability.

Maya works on communications and marketing for the Office of Sustainability. She writes creative nonfiction in the Master of Fine Arts Program at the UA and is a graduate fellow with the UA Confluencenter. Maya writes about ecology, the environment, and science research. She holds a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in biology.
Jake is a graduate research assistant working with the Office of Sustainability to asses the environmental impacts of homecoming weekend activities at the UA. He holds a bachelor's degree in geology from Miami University and is pursuing a master's degree in hydrology and water resources at the UA. Previously, Jake worked as a project coordinator for a development management consulting firm in Chicago. He also served as an education assistant and interpretive park ranger at Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska, through the Student Conservation Association. Jake is a LEED Accredited Professional as granted by the U.S. Green Building Council.
I have studied permaculture and sustainability practices for many years, specifically sustainable landscape architecture, and will be taking courses in urban planning to develope a more foundational understanding of sustainability as a long-term community apparatus. The building I currently work in is Drachman Hall Bldg B and it was designed and built using green initiatives. I look forward to developing and assisting the University in implimenting as many green building opportunities as possible
Jacob, a Tucson native, is studying water resource economics at the University of Arizona. He is a senior in the Department of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jacob brings his experience working with UA Student Union Technology Services to optimizing data collection for the Office of Sustainability. Jacob has been passionate about recycling since he was a child, leading to his interests in sustainability. He enjoys hiking, reading and playing music.
I am a sophomore, and I am studying Environmental Science and Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Law. I am planning on graduating in 2014 in hopes to pursue an Environmental Law Degree. I also work with Students for sustainability, the Honors Student Council Sustainability Committee, and several other clubs to help promote sustainability across campus. I like to play the viola and work on art projects.
Natalie is pursuing a master's degree in developmental practice from the University of Arizona's School of Geography and Development. In 2013 Natalie graduated from the UA with a dual undergraduate degree: a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, politics, economics and law and a Bachelor of Science in environmental science. As an Office of Sustainability research assistant, Natalie is developing guides to writing successful Green Fund grants and to running campus sustainability projects. Natalie was Executive Director of Students for Sustainability for three years at the UA. She attended the United Nations 2012 Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar, as a delegate with Sierra Student Coalition (SSC). Natalie also writes student training curriculum used nationally by SSC. She is extremely passionate about campus sustainability.

Tania Mashkoory is a junior at the UA majoring in broadcast journalism with minors in Spanish and Farsi. Tania works on social media for the Office of Sustainability, and helps spread the word about sustainable events on the UA campus and in the Tucson community. Tania's hometown is sunny San Diego, and she loves Pilates, yoga, spinning, and hiking.
Shoshana is lead researcher on a study of the challenges, opportunities, and next steps for engaging students and employees in UA campus sustainability projects. Her background is in political ecology, global change, and stakeholder engagement. For her master’s degree in geography, Shoshana researched the use of volunteers at sea turtle conservation sites in Costa Rica. Shoshana is an Arizona native and enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and son.
I am a senior in Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources. My project centers around understanding the relationship between energy and water on campus. I have worked with the UA Office of Sustainability on a research project to determine how much CO2 is put into the air from water usage and transport to and around campus. I would like to support lowering the university's water usage and our carbon emissions.
A Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, Richard served in El Salvador from 2005-2007 as a Municipal Development Volunteer. Graduated in May 2011 with a masters in Public Administration here at the University of Arizona, Richard is specializing his studies in both program management and development issues. He is also interested in sustainable practices across social, environmental and economic dimensions.
Graduate of Regional and Urban Planning with courses on Sustainability Practices and Environmental issues. I am excitied to learn more and assist with any challenges to promote a healthier sustainable campus. I work on Campus for the Office of Admissions and I am available to attend meetings and serve this committe.
Tranportation Services is an integral partner in the University's sustainability efforts. I have been involved in several projects with a sustainability nexus. I would like to help the University move toward a more sustainable campus through common sense approaches, thoughtful use of new technologies and innovation. Sustainability is important to the future of the University on many levels. I would like to be a part of designing that future.

My interest in sustainability began during the 1970's oil crises, while I was in college at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. R. Buckminster Fuller was one of my idols at that time. I thought I would be a solar power engineer.
After 27 years of other engineering work, I recently returned to school and graduated with a new degree in Sustainable Community Development from Prescott College.
I'm interested in all aspects of sustainability and creating green environments, both inside and out.
Craig Reinbold is a recent graduate of the MFA nonfiction program at the University of Arizona, and writes about various environment-related issues. He conducts interviews and writes profiles for the Office of Sustainability, highlighting student and faculty involvement in Green Fund-sponsored projects around campus.
I have spent the greater part of my professional career in the administration of international agricultural research and development programs outside the United States. I have served as Director of the Arid Lands Research Center in Abu Dhabi, Associate Director of the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center in Taiwan, Senior Advisor to the Director General for Agriculture Research in Sudan, Representative of the University of Arizona on Halophyte Research in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
I have a keen interest in teaching, particularly in conveying some of the lessons learned in my diverse international experience to students interested in international agriculture.
My current research focuses on improving water management and conservation in aridlands. In particular I am working on rainwater harvesting as an important source of water and halophyte irrigation as a means of utilizing brine streams from power plants and desalting plants.
Alex Ross works on graphic design for the Office of Sustainability. She is currently working on design projects that will help make Homecoming 2013 more sustainable. Alex is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in visual communications from the University of Arizona. Alex grew up in Alaska, and after graduation she plans to travel and explore the world. For Alex, the world is full of sustainable images that she strives to bring to live in a clear and aesthetic way.
Julia is the Office of Sustainability's Coordinator of Sustainability Programs. Julia oversees the UA’s student-directed Green Fund, and helps coordinate UA’s EcoOps representatives, who engage employees on working and living sustainably. Julia has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education as well as a teaching credential in elementary education. For 16 years prior to coming to the UA, Julia managed a doctor’s office that concentrated on holistic living. One of her goals is to initiate a sustainability outreach program for businesses around Tucson to offer guidance and suggestions on how they can function more sustainably.

I have recently completed a class at pima community college which deal with topics in solar thermal for water heating, space heating and collection. With my background in plumbing I could prove to be help full with review low consumption plumbing fixtures and solar integration.
I am the program coordinator for the Maricopa County Master Gardeners. We teach volunteers on such topics such as water conservation, energy efficient landscape design, and proper plant care.
Environment and sustainability are high priorities for me. The more I can incorporate this into my life, the better. The UA should be an example for the Tucson community of how to live, work, play, and study in a sustainable way and I would like to be involved in making that happen.
